Persistent Residual Herbicides

Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters

Most herbicides commonly used in the home yard or garden do not contaminate compost since they break down in the composting process. However, there are exceptions. Avoid adding plants to a composting operation that have been contaminated with persistent herbicides, as well as the the manures from animals who have eaten those plants.

For more information about persistent herbicides, please visit US Composting Council, Persistent Herbicide Factsheets.
