Intermediate Hands-On Composting Workshop
May 2, 2020
Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters
When and Where: This is our fourth annual Intermediate Hands-On workshop. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the home of Bill and Rye Bailey in Albuquerque's south valley. After you register, address and directions will be provided.
Prerequisites: The workshop is open to those who have already attended one of our Home Composting Basics classes or one of our comprehensive workshops. It is useful if you have also taken Bokashi Bucket Composting and Composting with Worms (Vermicomposting) beforehand, but those are not required. (Please see Classes and Other Activities for the Public for offerings of these free classes.)
What We'll Do:
- You will get hands-on experience with an actual multi-bin hot compost pile: creating, turning, and sifting.
- You will explore several static composting approaches such as keyhole gardening, creating in-ground sponges, and applications for Bokashi bucket contents.
- You will spend an hour or so discussing vermicomposting outdoors by revisiting the bin that was constructed during this workshop in 2019, taking into consideration bin environment, food and moisture, harvesting, and over-wintering.
Please Note: The workshop includes a lot of walking on uneven ground as well as using hands and tools to accomplish the various tasks. There is considerable outdoor activity involved. Areas will be available if you need to take a break, and you will be free to do so at any time. If you need other accommodations please let us know when you register. You can also call/text the number below.
Lunch! A simple lunch will be provided. Several master composters will be present and we'll have an informal compost discussion while we are eating.
What to Wear and Bring: Participants should come prepared to work outdoors. Wear appropriate clothing, sun protection, footwear, hat, gloves. Bring a water bottle, refills available on site. Also, it will be helpful, if you can, to bring tools such as a garden spade, pitchfork, shovel, garden claw, hand hoe, or even a wheelbarrow. If you bring any tools, please label them clearly with your name.
Cost and Registration: Cost is $20. That includes lunch. Pre-registration with payment is required. Registration deadline is three days before the workshop. Your payment is refundable up until one week before the workshop.
Class size is limited to 20. It usually fills up so don't delay registering. (No cost for BCEMC master composters and interns but please let us know if you are coming.)
You may register using the button below. You will have the option to pay via debit or credit card or you can use PayPal.
Or, you may mail your name, email address, and a check for $20, payable to Bernco Master Composter Association, to:
