Composting with Fermented Plant Materials
Thanks to recent monsoon downpours, most gardeners in the Albuquerque region are now blessed with an abundance of extra growth in the form of so-called weeds. These volunteers are actually here to help, but most folks consider them a nuisance that must be removed and disposed of. In this workshop we'll learn how to channel our inner buffalo to harness the vitality of what would otherwise be treated as part of the waste stream. Come learn how to make mineral and biological ferments and extracts from materials in your own yard or neighborhood. The tools are simple, the methods are simple and quick, and the results are inspiring. Michael Reed will host the presentation. Come prepared to get your hands dirty.

Biochar
Take one part science, a few parts alchemy, sprinkle in a dash of wild magic, cook until done in the wisest of kitchens and you have biochar. This is actually an ancient tradition reinvented to be used appropriately in our contemporary, highly flammable environment. We are taking organic materials out of the waste stream and converting them into a substance that sequesters carbon and helps to build extraordinarily fertile, humus-rich soils, even in our high desert home. We'll discuss a few different methods and demonstrate one, from feedstock to nearly finished biochar. Michael Reed will host the presentation. Come prepared to get your hands dirty. (Please note, this workshop was originally scheduled for November 6 but has been changed to November 13.)

Home Composting Basics
Home composting is recycling that produces a useful soil conditioner. Basic composting science will be presented with a special focus on useful practices for a high desert climate. A variety of home composting options will be covered. Useful take-home information will help a participant get started and/or improve an already chosen composting method. After the instruction, weather permitting, we'll take a tour of the GHH property to see the various composting setups at work. Instructor: Rod Reay.

The series is a collaboration of the Hubbell House Alliance and staff, the Bernalillo County Open Space Program, and the Bernalillo County Extension Master Composters.
